In 2020, the Minority Caucus of the Metro Council and a group of community leaders came forward to sponsor and support a city ordinance to rename Fifth Avenue in memory of the late U.S. Representative John Lewis – Rep. John Lewis Way.
On Saturday, July 17, the first anniversary of Rep. Lewis’s death, the community will gather for the formal dedication of Rep. John Lewis Way and a celebration of his life.
Activities include a march from Jefferson Street to the Bridgestone Arena plaza where the street will be formally dedicated, followed by a celebration event at the Ryman Auditorium.
There will also be a memorial service on Friday, July 16, organized by American Baptist College, Fisk University, The JLW Committee and First Baptist Church as part of the weekend activities.
You can help make this event successful by contributing to the Nashville Unites Fund at The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. Your contribution to the Fund will help us in the planning and execution of a city-wide dedication ceremonies to honor the late civil rights legend.
